KERBEDANZ has given to this watch the name of a gemstone: SAPPHEIROS - the Greek name of «sapphire». This ancient Greek word also meant, originally, the «lapis lazuli»; a semi-precious stone which name comes from the Latin lapis, which means «stone», and the Persian lazuli, meaning «blue». This explains why the same term Sappheiros was used by the ancient Greeks to designate indiscriminately these two blue stones which are sapphire and lapis lazuli.

The sapphire was nevertheless known in Greek Antiquity under the name of Hyakinthos, a name given to the blue hyacinth and purplish-blue iris and then, by extension, to a purplish blue precious stone, to the sapphire from Sri Lanka.

But for KERBEDANZ, of course, the name of this watch SAPPHEIROS refers to the second hardest gemstone after diamond: the SAPPHIRE. Like the ruby, which is natural red corundum, the sapphire is natural blue corundum, but in fact, this corundum can also be colorless, pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, or black and can have all intermediate tones, while retaining its name of “sapphire”.
